1. Rinse & apply toothpaste

First, put the bristles under running water for a few seconds to moisten. Then apply your favorite toothpaste. To avoid toothpaste splatter, place the brush head in your mouth before you press the power button.

2. Position brush head

Place the bristles of the brush toward the gumline. The brush should be placed at an angle between your teeth and gumline as seen in the diagram.

Using light pressure, gently wiggle the tips of the longer bristles between your teeth for 2 seconds. Then glide the bristles to the next tooth and pause so you can again gently wiggle the tips of the longer bristles between your teeth. For best results, use only light pressure. The bristles should lightly touch your teeth and gums.

3. Divide mouth into sections

Divide your mouth into four sections. Begin in section 1 and spend about 30 seconds brushing that section before moving on to section
2. Continue brushing each section for 30 seconds until you have completed all four sections. Be sure to spend equal amounts of time brushing all the surfaces of your teeth.

4.Using the Quadpacer

If your model has the Quadpacer feature (See "Which Model" to find out if your model has this feature), it alerts you to move the brush to the next section of your mouth. At 30, 60 and 90 seconds, you'll hear a short beep, and feel a slight interruption of the brushing action. This is your signal to move the brush to the next section.

5. Brushing time

The Smartimerâ„¢ automatically stops your Sonicare toothbrush after the dentist-recommended 2-minute brushing time. If at any time during brushing you momentarily stop the brush to rinse or apply more toothpaste, the Smartimer pauses its timing so that you can pick up where you left off to complete the 2-minute brushing cycle. Although the 2-minute time is recommended for optimal results, you can always stop or restart the brush at any time by pressing the power button. Whenever the handle is placed in the charger, the Smartimer automatically resets to ensure a full brushing cycle the next time you use it. The Smartimer also automatically resets itself if you stop your Sonicare toothbrush for longer than 45 seconds.

6. Extra brushing time

Your dental professional may instruct you to spend extra time brushing certain areas of your teeth. To do this, simply restart your Sonicare toothbrush by pressing the power button.

7. Rinse mouth & bristles

Rinse your mouth with water after brushing; then rinse the bristles under running water to remove excess toothpaste after brushing.

8. Replacing brush heads

We recommend you replace your brush head at least every 6 months to ensure optimal performance. You can get replacement brush heads through a number of our retail partners (in stores near you or online).
